If you are traveling on a budget, staying in Japan might be expensive but not impossible, finding affordable accommodation is not that really hard where there are some great options.

Hostel, like a motel in the US

The most common form of cheap short-term accommodation. Most hostel are now have part-time English speaker which make it quite convenient. Some name like K’s House, J’s House are quite famous in the hostel industry.

Cost:

  • Dorm rooms could range from JPY 2000 – 3000 (US$18-27).
  • If you are traveling on a budget, staying in Japan might be expensive but not impossible, finding affordable accommodation is not that really hard where there are some great options.
  • A private room could range around JPY 8000 – 11,000 ($70-100).

Business Hotel

Boomed during the golden economic era of Japan, where businessmen/women travel across the country on their business trip, or some, just simple stay overnight after work, drinking party. In Tokyo, you can find business hotels at every train station, at all the train stations. Unfortunately, not all hotel staff can speak English.

Cost: Price is vary, could get you from 5200 to 12,000 ($50-106) per room.

Staying in the unique Capsule Hotel in Japan

Uniquely from Japan, where you sleep in a sleeping pod while sharing the bathroom and common room with other guests. The Pod, however, is not really bigger than a single bed but equipped with TV, light, Alarm, Radio, and cozy. Lady and Gentlement are separated on different floors.

Cost: it could range from 3000 to 4500 yen ($26-40) per night per person.

Internet Cafe

Or Manga Kissa Cafe (Manga Kissa Ten), usually for people who love comics to enjoy its heaven, sometime, people actually live there. Each booth comes with a computer, a chair that serve as a bed, and usually has an open-top. While you can also rent a private room for yourself, but the number is limited and expensive. Price is calculated hourly.

Cost: Price is calculated hourly., for an overnight stay, it could get you 1500 – 3000 yen ($13-26).

Love Hotel

If you are a couple, Love Hotel could be a random great choice. Each room has a designed theme, some are really lovely, and some are really weird. This type of accommodation is very common in Japan, aim to give couples some privacy.

Cost: It could cost you around 8000 yen ($70) for an overnight stay.

Couchsurfing

Very common with foreigners but not with Japanese. As the different cultures in Japan, they do not usually have strangers stay overnight at their place. However if you are lucky to find one, it’s free for a stay. Just note that it is not always safe and secured.

Homii Homestay

If you are spending your time in Japan for a little longer than a month, doing Homestay could be a good choice. Homestay provides you the best chance to experience Japanese culture deeper by staying with a local family, hanging out with different people, and let you know what tourists can’t get their hands on.
